A rose, an alarm and a cricket…Housed in a 36mm rose gold case, this mechanical alarm watch was ground breaking upon its release in the late 1940s.
The rose gold case is in wonderful condition for its age and the original dial is in outstanding condition, with steel applied Roman numerals and outer alarm minutes track in striking blue. The pusher at 2 o’clock allows the alarm hand to be set. The four hands are all in good original condition. The caliber 120 manual wind movement was groundbreaking when it was first released in 1947. The alarm function was made possible by the movement utilizing two barrels – one for the movement and one for the alarm. You wind the winding crown clockwise to wind the alarm and anti-clockwise to wind the movement. It was the first wristwatch-housed alarm and the sound was reminiscent of the chirping of crickets…hence the name!
The Cricket has a nickname (like all iconic watches) – The Presidents’ Watch’. In 1953 Vulcain gifted President Harry Truman with a cricket and the tradition has continued with every American President since. The watch has been fully serviced by our watchmaker.
